History Comes Alive ...

What better way to appreciate a community or region than to experience first hand, the history that made it what it is today.  The Cornwall & Seaway Valley region is where Ontario began and celebrates its rich history with the United Empire Loyalists, the Scottish heritage in Glengarry, the French connection in Alexandria and Cornwall, and the entire region celebrates the pioneer way of life.

Step out of your world and into the past at Upper Canada Village, an 1860's working pioneer village, watch a battle re-enactment for the War of 1812, view artifacts from the days of the fur traders, wander through some of Ontario's finest heritage homes, step into an historic jail built in 1834, take a walking tour of a quanity country village or tour the many outdoor murals throughout the regional all depicting important historical evens or locations.  We cherish our history and heritage, and it is an important part of our communities.

Not all history is old though, the mid 1950's forever changed this region as the St. Lawrence Seaway Power Project changed the lay of the land, and the lives of residents forever.  Some villages were moved to higher ground while other villages and hamlets disappeared beneath the waters of the newly created Lake St. Lawrence.  2008-2009 markes the 50th anniversary of this join Canada/USA project with "Beacon 50" - a 6 day celebration leading into Canada Day.  What better way to celebrate our past, our present and our future.

Take the family on an educational tour of the prehistoric ages as you see and learn about the dinosaurs.  Each one is set in a natural setting and life sized.  Learning can be fun!

Special events such as the War of 1812 Battle Re-enactment are great with pageantry and sometimes even an opportunity to join in.  Experience a wedding, election or funeral as it was held in the 1860's.

Doors Open provides a glimpse into historical sites that are not normally open to the general public - sites such as the old courthouse, the power dam, and other unique locations.
